The Malaysian Judicial Academy organized the "Election Petition 2020" Course on 16th October 2020 (Friday) at the Deputy Chief Registrar II (Operations) Meeting Room, Palace of Justice, Putrajaya. The objective of this course was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of election laws and procedures. This course was the first one conducted via online to comply with the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) at Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur and WP Putrajaya, on 14th – 27th October 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19 virus. This course has received cooperation from the Office of the Chief Registrar Federal Court of Malaysia in terms of program location and ICT technical support assistance, especially in the use of Zoom Meeting application.


A total of 22 High Court Judges participated in the online course including The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, Chief Justice of Federal Court Malaysia who also delivered the opening address.

This course consisted of three lectures sessions in the morning and a discussion session in the afternoon. The lecture sessions encompassed these titles: "Introduction to Election Laws and Regulations" by The Right Honourable Tan Sri Rohana binti Yusuf, President of the Court of Appeal; "Technical Objections and Interpretation of the Laws in an Election Petition" by The Right Honourable Dato' Abang Iskandar bin Abang Hashim, Chief Judge of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak; and "Practice and Procedures on Election Petition" by The Honourable Datuk Hajah Azizah binti Haji Nawawi, Judge of the Court of Appeal. The "Open Discussion on Issues Raised in an Election Petition with Reference to Case Laws" involved facilitators namely, The Right Honourable Tan Sri Rohana binti Yusuf, President of the Court of Appeal; The Honourable Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Zawawi bin Salleh, Federal Court Judge cum the Chairman of the Training Committee of Malaysian Judicial Academy; The Honourable Datuk Hajah Azizah binti Haji Nawawi, Judge of the Court of Appeal; The Honourable Datuk Ravinthran a/l N. Paramaguru, Judge of the Court of Appeal; The Honourable Datuk Supang Lian, Judge of the Court of Appeal; and The Honourable Dato’ Lee Heng Cheong, Judge of the Court of Appeal. In this session, the facilitators and participants were free to share their experiences or opinions as well as asking and answering questions related to the election petition.
